The Circle Hypothesis

If you’ve read this blog before, you’re well aware that I have teenagers. And yet when dealing with my boys I often find myself thinking (OK, even sometimes saying) “isn’t that something you learned when you were, like, two?” So I entered Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine (some of you may need to Google that), to revisit the behaviors I addressed when the boys were little. And I was a little stunned.

In the name of scientific discovery, I ended up developing a hypothesis about a vicious circle in parenting. And further, based on a simple questionnaire (of the Women’s Magazine type), you can see where you are in that circle. My theory is that the older your kids, the higher your score. Want to join my study? Take the test? Easy Peasy, it’s multiple choice.

Answer Options:
A) a 2 year old
B) a teenager
C) both A and B
D) none of the above

Here’s how it works; for each of the 15 statements below, choose the answer that best fits the age of the child described; A, B, C, or D.

1. The answer to everything is “no”.

2. Don’t pick up their toys.

3. Whine at dinner.

4. Don’t come when called.

5. Is always in the way when Mom’s in the kitchen.

6. Doesn’t always play well with others.

7. Thinks Fruit Snacks are a fruit.

8. Wants to drive the car.

9. When Mom says “no”, goes and asks Dad.

10. Responsible for Mom needing a Brunch Cocktail.

Brunch Cocktail

11. Watches TV way too loud.

12. Goes into their room and slams the door when they don’t get their way.

13. Deliberately uses naughty words.

14. Takes whatever they want and thinks everything they see belongs to them.

15. Takes naps, but only now and then.

Finished? Want to see how you did? For each answer, give yourself the corresponding points:
A) 1 point
B) 2 points
C) 3 points
D) 0 points

Now just add up your points and check out your results:
0 to 15 points: You just wait. . .
16 to 29 points: You’re getting it . . .
30 to 44 points: Having teens is sorta like Deja vu, isn’t it?
45 points: Welcome to the club. Care for a Brunch Cocktail?

Now let me know, is the Circle Hypothesis holding up? What’s your score?

    1. Yikes, I thought 2 was bad and you'll have double. You may need a Brunch Cocktail IV.

  2. Well, I have neither a 2 year old OR a teen, but this sounds REMARKABLY like my kids and they are 3, 8, and 8. I'd die of shock if I made it through dinner without my 3 year old melting down or my 8 year old son picking at his food, regardless of if yesterday, it was his favorite. I've decided that all kids are certifiably insane....

    1. You may just have something there. We may need to do another study.

  3. I not only got 45, but having adult children, I could have gotten even more points because they still tend to revert when they are at Mom's! Especially when they move back in for " just a little while"!!

    1. Don't even tell me that "moving back in thing" is real. I've convinced myself it's an evil myth.

  4. Brunch cocktail for me, but you already knew that. Excellent study, ma'am. BTW, was I reading on FB that you had left over Cosmos in your fridge? How did that happen? Leftover alcohol? I know not of what you speak....

    1. Yes, leftover Cosmos. Rick was supposed to go out but hurt his back so I had to refrain from drinking them so I'd be able to drive. True story.

  8. All I can say is a cocktail recipe seems like the most appropriate with this post because well us mom's need them. :) Oh and I guess my two year old is completely preparing me for how he will be as a teenager now. Ugh you better post a lot more cocktail recipes.

  9. ROTFL Let me tell ya Karen, it doesn't change much when they are adults. My boys, all grown and out on their own. If you go to their places you see they never learned to clean very much, even though I swear I taught them. Kitchen is full of pizza boxes and the living room floor is littered with games system stuff. Hang in there and enjoy that cocktail

    1. Not happy to hear that, but at least then it won't be my problem on a daily basis (yes, I'm looking for the silver lining).

  10. I probably got the lowest score because I don't have teens yet. I have a 2 year old and a 6 year old so that explains a lot! lol

    Great post. Take care, Slu

  14. I'm scared to take this in the future! I am often driven to needing a drink - but usually don't bc they give me migraines!! What's a girl to do??

  16. Oh I so need that brunch cocktail, even with a 7yo boy I got all of those right, because you may have a Way-Back Machine, but I have the DeLorean Time Machine from Back to the Future.

    1. Yeah, if you got them all right, even with a 7 year old, you can see the future, you know where this all is heading . . .
