My subject is Things to do on a rainy day – written Cat in the Hat style. It was submitted by Just a Little Nutty. Here goes:
It’s a cold rainy day
and I just have to say
I’m not grocery shopping
in this weather, no way.
The kids are at school
so though bothering them’s the rule,
I’m here all alone,
this just is not cool.
So I think I will bake
and dinner I’ll make.
I was gonna grill out.
That was quite a mistake.
Honey Apple Cake
Barely finished the thought
when with anxiety I’m fraught.
There’s a monkey in my kitchen,
on his head is a pot.
He’s carrying my grill!
And is that a sprig of dill?
I scream “get out of my house”.
Answer: “take a chill pill”.
Then he runs to the door.
There’s a package, no four.
And inside the first three,
kitchen gadgets galore.
The monkey looked at me
and exclaimed with glee,
“here’s your widget, your blidget,
your new clix, dax and klee.”
Oh, but in that last box,
was a gnome with long locks.
OMG, he’s alive,
and moves quick as a fox.
The monkey and gnome
make themselves right at home
turning everything on,
filling my kitchen with foam.
The oven, the blender, the food processor and more,
the thing that removes the apple from its core.
There is flour on the ceiling
and eggs on the floor.
They concocted with glee,
using clix, dax and klee.
My house being destroyed
is what it looked like to me.
“Take your widgets your blidgets and even your klee.
You and your gnome I do not want to see.
My kids will be here,
it’s already after three.”
With a blink of his eye,
away the mess did fly.
House clean, kids walking in
as he winked and said “bye”.
“Still in pajamas, no way.
What have you done all day?”
“Well you know, my dear boys,
it’s just too hard to say”.
P.S. Don’t forget to come back to any of the swap posts tonight after 8:00pm Eastern time (through Sunday) to vote for your favorite Swap post and join in The Blog Strut linky party.
Honey Apple Cake
Printable Recipe
Ingredients:
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
¾ cup honey
1 ¼ cups oil
3 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 ¼ tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
3 apples, peeled, cored and chopped
¾ cups cinnamon baking chips
1 stick butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
¼ cup powdered sugar
Directions:
*Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
*Grease and flour a 9 X 13 baking pan.
*Whisk together the white sugar, brown sugar, honey, oil, eggs and vanilla.
*Mix in the flour, baking soda and cinnamon.
*Mix in the baking chips and apple pieces.
*Spread into prepared pan. Adjust the batter so there’s more along the sides and less in the center so it will cook more evenly.
*Bake for 45 minutes. It’s done when the center springs back to the touch.
*Cool completely. Using the bottom of a wooden spoon, poke holes in the cake.
*Heat the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon on the stove until all the butter is melted. Pour this topping over the cooled cake. Try to fill the holes made by the wooden spoon.
*Once the topping is cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

WOW!! Just WOW!!! An awesome prompt and you handled it superbly!!! LOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeletePrompt scared the cr@p out of me but once I started writing it was really fun.
DeleteYou, lady.....you absolutely NAILED THIS! I am in awe of how amazing you wrote this!
ReplyDeleteHonestly it was hard to get started but once I did it was simple rhyming words. Nothing that'll get me any literary prizes.
DeleteHoly Cow that was a tough prompt and you did AMAZING!! Who knew you had a little Dr. Seuss in you? Wait, that sounded bad. You know what I mean....
ReplyDeleteSeriously, LOVED it!!!
Ha ha, I certainly had no idea that I had a little Dr. Seuss in me. Yep, still sounds bad. . .
DeleteA poem? How cool is that?! You go girlfriend. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, a poem. Sort of. Don't tell any real poets though, they'd be offended at the use of the word here.
DeleteExcellent!!!! I love this. When I read the subject of your prompt I thought I my god I would have panicked with that one. You did awesome. I would like to see this in a cartoon version. It would be quite entertaining.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, I panicked. I was terrified for quite a while till I finally got started writing it.
DeleteAdorable! You're a poet and you didn't know it, haha! Clever idea for a difficult prompt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marcia. More like I'm not a poet and now everyone knows it!
DeleteThat was AWESOME!!
ReplyDeleteYou owned it! Plus worked monkey and gnome int the same sentence.
Could not have been better! I agree with Jennifer... the animated version would be really cute. :)
I just cornered the market on apples. This recipe could not have come at a better time. Perfect! Thank you!
Oh, the recipe is a variation on someone else's (gave her credit above, of course) but we loved it. Hope you do too.
DeleteYou have to be one of the most creative people this side of the world...wow! all I can say is you nailed this one girl! :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen some of your Halloween treats, my lame attempt at poetry certainly does not make me one of the most creative people, but I sure do love the compliment.
DeleteJust perfect.
ReplyDeleteThank you. A little daunting and intimidating but I did it.
DeleteThat was brilliant. Move over Dr Seuss there's a new rhymer in town. Now can you write about thirty books for my daughter as she's bored with her current library and I want something new to read to her...
ReplyDeleteHa ha, I'll get right to work on that.
DeleteBrilliant!! I can't wait to read it to the boys!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they'll think I'm amazingly talented at rhyming like a first grader.
DeleteThis needs to be published, it would be a bestseller for sure! Very creative :)
ReplyDeleteLOL, yeah, I think I'll pass on that publishing thing.
DeleteWhat a poet! Maybe a hidden talent to go along with all that great baking skill!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I'll stick to baking.
DeleteLMAO! That "gnome with long locks" reminds me of Jerry Garcia, which then reminds me of Ben & Jerry's, which then reminds me of Cherry Garcia.
ReplyDeleteSee how the world just turns back on itself sometimes? *whoaaaa dude*
Have I ever told you I like the way you think? I'm pretty sure I have.
DeleteYou have a wonderful blog!! I'm your newest GFC follower from the “Blog Strut“ blog hop - this is my blog if you wanted to follow back: godsgrowinggarden.com
ReplyDeleteThanks
Angie

Thank you so much for joining in the hop.
Deletethis rocks Karen...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!! WOOOOHOOOO I am so amazed how you wrote thise...I would not have the ability or patience, LOL
ReplyDeleteI didn't think I'd be able to write anything either, the prompt was pretty daunting. But I have to admit that it's easier to rhyme when you get to make up some of the words!
DeleteLove the poem and hate the fact that I missed my first SSS. I know I signed up for the second, but I feel like we've been in this together. Congratulations to you and all of the writers you've inspired. I truly adore you.
ReplyDeleteLove you right back. And you haven't missed a month since we started. You were the inspiration for the Swap and I'm grateful to you for this amazing community of talented writers I get to play with every month.
