Who's a Witch?

Once a year my kids can get away with calling me a Witch (just as long as it starts with a “W” and not a “B”).  So have your fun guys, cause for the next 364 days there’ll be consequences for calling me that.

(Candy Filled) Witch’s Hats

There is not much that’s more iconic this time of year than witches, so it’s not surprising that I chose the witch as my first “adult” Halloween costume.  Truth be told, if a  witch is defined as a woman who possesses supernatural, magical powers (and it is, well partly anyway, yes I looked it up), I can work with that.

I do, after all, possess many supernatural and magical powers.

Supernatural:
Well, I can mix a cocktail with one hand tied behind my back.
I can do a shot with both hands behind my back.
I can deduce guilt just by looking my kid in the eye.
I can tell, from a full floor away, if a kid is on the computer when he’s supposed to be doing homework.
I can tell you exactly who emptied the candy jar, even if I wasn’t home when it happened.

Magical:
I can make cookies appear.
I can bake a cake that disappears.
I can make lost gloves appear.
I can make socks disappear.
I made 2 amazing boys appear.
And I’m currently working on a spell to make those same 2 boys disappear.

So if the broom fits…

Witch’s Fingers

I know it’s all about the kids (both the holiday and the baking), but the witch’s finger cookie is my favorite.  It’s easy to make, I love how it looks, and everyone seems to like it.  I’m pleased to say that none of my digits were removed in the making of these treats.

Ingredients:
Ice cream cones
Sugar cookies (must be bigger than the large opening of the cone)
Black cake-writing gel
Blue cake-writing gel
Red hots
Small candies: M&Ms, Red Hots, Reese’s pieces, etc

Directions:
*Hold the cone by the point. Put some candies inside.  Rim the cone with the black cake-writing gel and place a sugar cookie on top. Put the cone in a cup to hold it up until the gel “glues” the cookie to the cone.
*Holding the cookie in place, gently turn it over and place it on the cookie. Put a dab of black cake writing gel at the top of the cone and “glue” a red hot to the top.
*Using the blue cake-writing gel, make a bow shape on the cookie. Let dry before touching.

Witch’s Fingers

Ingredients:
1 stick butter, softened
1 stick margarine, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp almond extract
2 3/3 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Green food coloring
Sliced almonds
Red cake-writing gel
Chocolate chips

Directions:

*Beat butter, margarine, sugar, egg, almond extract, vanilla and a little green food coloring (can always add more).
*Mix in the flour, baking powder and salt to form a dough.  If you want more color, put in more green food coloring once the dough comes together.
*Refrigerate for one hour (I’ve made the dough the day before, too).
*Preheat oven to 325 degrees, grease baking sheets.
*Using about a Tablespoon of dough, roll into a finger shape, thicker on one end and thinner on the other.
*Place the fingers on the cookie sheets and squeeze together in 2 spots to look like knuckles. Make 3 thin slices, not deep and close together just above each “knuckle”.  Stick a sliced almond into the cookie just above the thin end to look like a fingernail.
*Bake for 20 minutes.  Watch and be sure they don’t get too brown.
*As soon as they come out of the oven, put on a chocolate chip “wart”.
*When they cool, carefully use red cake-writing gel along the sides and bottom of the “nail” to look like “blood”.
