Secret Subject Swapiversary

You are cordially invited to a birthday celebration:
Happy Birthday, Secret Subject Swap! The first Secret Subject Swap posted on October 4th, 2012. Today I’m publishing a post written for a Secret Subject Swap for the 23rd time. It’s been a joy to have been part of this Swap community for the past year.

The party: Tonight if you come back to this or any of the sites posting a Secret Subject Swap you can join the Blog Strut blog hop. All of today’s Secret Subject Swap participants will be co-hosting this very popular linky party.

The games: What’s a party without a game, right? So once the hop goes live on all of our sites, it will include a friendly little competition. Read all of the swaps and go to any Swap blog to vote for your favorite of today’s Swap posts. Who will be the Queen of the Swap? It's in your hands!

A huge thank you to Angela of My Personal Accent and her webgenius Amber for making this swapiversary extravaganza possible.

So welcome to the Secret Subject Swapiversary. This time 12 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a prompt to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously unveiling our topics and publishing our posts.

My subject is Things to do on a rainy day – written Cat in the Hat style. It was submitted by Just a Little Nutty. Here goes:

It’s a cold rainy day
and I just have to say
I’m not grocery shopping
in this weather, no way.

The kids are at school
so though bothering them’s the rule,
I’m here all alone,
this just is not cool.

So I think I will bake
and dinner I’ll make.
I was gonna grill out.
That was quite a mistake.

Honey Apple Cake

Barely finished the thought
when with anxiety I’m fraught.
There’s a monkey in my kitchen,
on his head is a pot.

He’s carrying my grill!
And is that a sprig of dill?
I scream “get out of my house”.
Answer: “take a chill pill”.

Then he runs to the door.
There’s a package, no four.
And inside the first three,
kitchen gadgets galore.

The monkey looked at me
and exclaimed with glee,
“here’s your widget, your blidget,
your new clix, dax and klee.”

Oh, but in that last box,
was a gnome with long locks.
OMG, he’s alive,
and moves quick as a fox.

The monkey and gnome
make themselves right at home
turning everything on,
filling my kitchen with foam.

The oven, the blender, the food processor and more,
the thing that removes the apple from its core.
There is flour on the ceiling
and eggs on the floor.

They concocted with glee,
using clix, dax and klee.
My house being destroyed
is what it looked like to me.

“Take your widgets your blidgets and even your klee.
You and your gnome I do not want to see.
My kids will be here,
it’s already after three.”

With a blink of his eye,
away the mess did fly.
House clean, kids walking in
as he winked and said “bye”.

“Still in pajamas, no way.
What have you done all day?”

“Well you know, my dear boys,
it’s just too hard to say”.

Honey Apple Cake

Printable Recipe

Ingredients:
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
¾ cup honey
1 ¼ cups oil
3 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 ¼ tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
3 apples, peeled, cored and chopped
¾ cups cinnamon baking chips

1 stick butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
¼ cup powdered sugar

Directions:
*Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
*Grease and flour a 9 X 13 baking pan.
*Whisk together the white sugar, brown sugar, honey, oil, eggs and vanilla.
*Mix in the flour, baking soda and cinnamon.
*Mix in the baking chips and apple pieces.
*Spread into prepared pan. Adjust the batter so there’s more along the sides and less in the center so it will cook more evenly.
*Bake for 45 minutes. It’s done when the center springs back to the touch.
*Cool completely. Using the bottom of a wooden spoon, poke holes in the cake.
*Heat the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon on the stove until all the butter is melted. Pour this topping over the cooled cake. Try to fill the holes made by the wooden spoon.
*Once the topping is cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

    1. Honestly it was hard to get started but once I did it was simple rhyming words. Nothing that'll get me any literary prizes.

    1. Yes, a poem. Sort of. Don't tell any real poets though, they'd be offended at the use of the word here.

    1. I've seen some of your Halloween treats, my lame attempt at poetry certainly does not make me one of the most creative people, but I sure do love the compliment.

  14. LMAO! That "gnome with long locks" reminds me of Jerry Garcia, which then reminds me of Ben & Jerry's, which then reminds me of Cherry Garcia.
