Pepperoni Parmesan Crescents: Read Across America Blog With Friends

Today’s post is the next in our series of Blog With Friends themed collaborations. Each month a group of bloggers get together and each publish a project based on a theme. What I love about his partnership is that it's not bloggers with similar interests or strengths but a diverse group coming up with a variety of posts. In any given month we may a recipe, sewing tutorial, crocheting, crafts project, book review, and/or technology post all related to the theme of the month.

This month's theme is Read Across America.

There will be individual project pictures and links to what everyone else has to offer at the end of my post, but here's a peek at what we all came up with:

Pepperoni Parmesan Crescents

Read Across America was one week ago today. Since its inception in 1997, the day is generally celebrated on March 2nd (or the week day closest to the 2nd, as it's celebrated in schools). It's a day for commemorating reading, and it's observed on March 2nd because that is the birthday of Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Other names for this is Cat in the Hat Day, Green Eggs and Ham Day, and Dr. Seuss Day.

Theodore (Seuss) Geisel was born in Massachusetts (yay), was well educated, and along with other accomplishments, went on to write and illustrate over 60 books as Dr. Seuss. For me, his biggest accomplishment was to add fun and whimsy and untethered imagination to reading in a way it hadn't been before, a perfect introduction to the joy of reading for many children through the generations. Choosing his birthday as Read Across America Day was a great choice.

I'm a reader. My genre of choice is mystery. Most books that I read I wouldn't read again. After all, I know the ending But I'll sit down with a child and read a Dr. Seuss book over and over again.

In terms of this blog post, of course you know I celebrate with food. I shared a really fun recipe years ago when we chose the theme Green for our March Blog With Friends, I called it Green, Egg and Ham. Today I'm sharing the recipe for a snack, because the only thing I love more than sitting down with a book, is sitting down with a book and a snack. What I love about these Pepperoni Parmesan Crescents is that they're quick and easy to make, so making them doesn't eat (get it, eat?) into my reading time. And they're a warm snack for these cold days.

Start by gathering a few ingredients:

Don't forget these when you're looking for an appetizer too. When I put these crescents out as an appetizer, I serve them with warm Homemade Marinara for dipping.

As always, any time you make one of my recipes, feel free to post a picture of it to my Baking In A Tornado Facebook Page. I'd love to see it!

  1. I love to read or loved to read. Now Alexa reads to me. That reminds me of my childhood and the measles. In the day, they kept you in a darkened room and no reading. A precious Aunt would come read to me every day. She s my Mother’s youngest sister and in her 90’s. She still calls me her little girl.

    1. How sweet of her. I got the measles when I was in my 20s. When I came home to my apartment, my boyfriend was there. When I told him what I had, he jumped out the window. When I couldn't go to work, my boss kept complaining "why is this happening to me?" HER???? I was the one who was sick.

    2. I hope you didn’t marry the boyfriend. The bout you had with the shingles, I doubt he would be there for you. As for the boss, I never found one that said Get Well Soon without meaning hurry up and get back here, I am short staffed.

  2. I love a good snack when I'm reading or watching a movie. These would be easy to gobble up.

  3. I have never seen these miniature pepperoni sausages, only large slices on pizza!
In Switzerland we have a similar snack, we call it "Wienerli im Blätterteig", it's more of a hotdog style sausage in puff pastry. For Halloween we "paint" ghost faces on them and roll pastry around it, mummy style.

  4. So easy, I could even do it. This was Dr Seuss Day when my adult son was growing up. I had a big book with several Dr Seuss books in it. My personal favorite as an adult is Yertle the Turtle. He did various anti-Nazi cartoon writing in the years prior to the United States entering WWII. He was a great man. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. Glad you shared that little bit of information, I had no idea about the anti-nazi cartoons.

  5. Karen - tickled pink to have you join Mosaic Monday this week! When I was growing up, my Mom used to make Pigs in Blankets - very similar to your crescents. Yum yum! Like you, I don't tend to read books more than once, but I always enjoyed reading the kids' favorites to them time and time again. We still have them, just waiting for the grandkids to arrive!

    1. It'll be so much fun, for both of us, to some day be reading those books to little ones again.

  6. Dr. Seuss was amazing, getting kids to love reading.

We do a similar snack, with the tiny cocktail sausages. These look even better.

    1. Yes, we make those too, and my recipe was inspired by that one, but I made them bigger, added cheese and flavored the dough to make them very different in taste.

  7. Dr. Seuss' birthday was one of our favorites to celebrate. We wore pajamas and read books all day. The students always laughed seeing their teachers in our silly pjs. My favorite book of Dr. Seuss' was published after his death by his wife. It's called "My Many Colored Days." It's one of the sweetest of all. Your recipe would be perfect for after school snacks! Or in my case, before breakfast. LOL

  8. After this whirlwind month, I'm finally catching up. Those crescents look incredibly tasty. And don't seem to hard to make. I always love Read Across America Day as working in two school districts ... they usually do it up for Dr. Seuss Day. Lots of fun!
