I'm Begging You, Sun

This is how it started. Yeah, I know it's always a story with me, but you'll get used to it. So in October I wrote a poem called Stubble, Rubble, Boil and Bubble. I suck at poetry but that's OK because it was meant to be funny so ultimately I wouldn't know if you were laughing with me or at me.

Anyway, I casually asked my blogging friends if any of them wanted to do a Halloween poem too, and many of them did. The next month some of those friends wanted to do another group poetry post and then the next month and the one after that.

And so the monthly poetry posts were born. Each month we agree on a theme and each month we write whatever kind of poetry moves us. Through the process I've tried so many different forms. I've written Haikus, which are harder than you'd think, and I've written Limericks, which may not have done much for you, but sure had me laughing out loud.

So here I am again, another month another poetry attempt. My poetry still sucks, but my tenacity is certainly not in question.

The theme this month is Sun. And since I haven't seen it in so long I've forgotten what it looks like, my poem is called I'm Begging You, Sun.

I'm Begging You, Sun

Listen sun,
you've had your fun,
the torture's done,
COME OUT, don't run.

Stop playing hide and seek,
In the sky, you must peek
Stop clouds their steady leak
Please! I'm getting weak.

You must come out,
we need you, no doubt.
Crops getting washed out.
Think of the poor Brussels Sprout.

Need to use the grill,
go to the beach and chill,
the garden we'll till.
Warm summer days fit the bill.

Beer BBQ Grilled Pork Chops

If you want, I'll beg,
stand on one leg,
hell, I'll buy you a keg.
You have my word, I'd never renege.

So sun,
you've won,
I'm done,
I need fun.

1 red pepper

Blog With Friends: Pretzel Sandwich Snacks

Today’s post is the next in our series of Blog With Friends theme collaborations. Each month a group of bloggers get together and each publish a project based on a theme. What I love about this partnership is that it’s not bloggers with similar interests or strengths but a diverse group coming up with a variety of posts. In any given month we may have a recipe, sewing tutorial, crafts projects, book review and/or a technology post all related to the theme of the month.

This month's theme is Dad. There will be individual project pictures and links to what everyone else has to offer at the end of my post, but here’s a peek at what we all came up with:

Blog With Friends, monthly projects based on a theme. This month's theme: Dad | www.BakingInATornado.com | #recipe #projects #MyGraphics

I thought a lot about what recipe to share today. I originally thought I'd share something cooked on the grill since we always grill out on Father's Day. I considered posting a recipe in honor of my Dad, who I lost this past December.

Since having had children, though, Father's Day isn't just about my dad, but theirs. In fact, since we live 1500 miles away from any family, Father's Day celebration is all about Hubs. It's become a more meaningful celebration the older the kids get because family dinners, when we're all here together, have become few and far between.

So instead of posting a grilling recipe, and instead of posting a recipe in honor of my dad, I'm sharing a favorite of my kids' dad.

Pretzel Sandwich Snacks

We have a man-cave in our house. It's in the finished basement and has a fireplace, pool table, poker table, fridge, giant TV, and there's a full bath down there. I have to admit that when the kids were teenagers, Hubs often got kicked out of the man-cave as it became a kids' hangout more frequently than a Hubs' hang out. Now, though, he's got it back and it's his favorite place to watch sports, often with the kids. And if the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics or Bruins are on, chances are I'm the one down there cheering the loudest.

Some part of every weekend is spent watching whatever games happen to be on. And snacks are part of any sports afternoon. I love sending down a bowl of home made snacks. An absolute favorite is my Pretzel Sandwich Snacks. These are based on the pretzel, Hershey's Kiss, M&M snacks that everyone was making a year or so ago. What I love about mine is the way I can change up the flavors. I often make some of each; almond, peanut butter and caramel and mix them all together.

These are simple to make. Lay pretzels out on a baking sheet. Top with a chocolate, then a second pretzel and put in a warm oven.

Press gently then refrigerate to set.

Dip half of the sandwich in vanilla candy melts and allow to set again.

That's it. A favorite snack of the boys and their dad.

Wishing you all a very happy Father's Day.

Printable Recipe

Ingredients:
1 bag (16 oz) square pretzels (you won't use them all)
1 bag (7 - 8 oz) Almond and Dark Chocolate Dove Miniatures
1 bag (7 - 8 oz) Peanut Butter and Milk Chocolate Dove Miniatures
1 bag (7 - 8 oz) Caramel and Milk Chocolate Dove Miniatures
12 oz white candy melts or vanilla bark

Directions:
*Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Cover 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
*Remove paper from the chocolates and count them.
*Put as many pretzels as you have chocolates (other than the peanut butter ones) in a single layer onto the parchment paper. Leave a little space between each.
*Place as many pretzels as you have peanut butter chocolates on the second baking sheet.
*Place a chocolate in the center of each pretzel and top with a second pretzel.
*Cook the peanut butter pretzel sandwiches for about 1 minute and the others for about 3 minutes or until the chocolate is soft but not completely melted.
*Remove from oven and press gently. You want the chocolate to stick to the pretzels but you don't want the chocolate to ooze out.
*Place the baking sheets into the fridge for 1 hour or until set.
*Melt the candy melts or bark in the microwave according to package instructions. I like to use a mug.
*Lay parchment paper out on your counter.
*Dip half of each pretzel sandwich into the melted candy. Allow excess to drip off. Lay on parchment paper until completely set. Store in tightly sealed container.

Secret Subject Swap: All the Wine

Welcome a Secret Subject Swap. This month 12 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts. Read through mine and at the bottom you’ll find links to all of today’s other Secret Subject participants.

Secret Subject Swap | www.BakingInATornado.com | #MyGraphics

My subject is: How much wine could a stressed out mom drink if a stressed out mom could drink wine?
It was submitted by: Not That Sarah Michelle.

Have I told you lately, Sarah, how much I love the way you think?

You'd think a riddle like this would be hard to answer, but not so much.

All the wine.

That was a short post.

Actually, I started this blog to relieve stress. It's a way to completely engage my mind for a while and not think about whatever fresh hell my kids conjuring up that I need an emotional respite from. I also said that this is why I bake. And drink.

My mom didn't really like that I kept saying that. I'm sure she felt as though people were thinking that I drink so much I slosh when I walk. This isn't true, of course, I don't. Sometimes I eat my wine.

Berry Sangria Cake

I want to be careful here because alcoholism is a disease, a heartbreaking one. A serious one. And sometimes a fatal one. It hasn't touched my life but that doesn't mean I'm insensitive to it.

I'm not an alcoholic. I'm lucky because it means that I can use it as a crutch now and then. And I do.

Sometimes it's just a glass with dinner. Which, if it's red and won't keep, can turn into the necessity of finishing the bottle.

Sometimes it's just a way to unwind, even ensure I'll get to sleep quicker and sleep well.

But add kids to the equation and you've got a whole plethora of reasons. Many of which I've already written about. Like:

*The time PurDude, with his brand new learner's permit, was stopped in a turn lane waiting to turn and a police car came barreling at him full speed in PurDude's lane. The kid had no choice but to pull over into oncoming traffic.

*The time PurDude (still driving on his learner's permit) was pulled over for suspicion of robbery.

*The time PurDude called me on my birthday to tell me he broke his leg.

*The time PurDude dropped his brand new $600 cell phone into the toilet.

*The time College Boy got in trouble at school for video taping a fight. And then the next year did the exact same thing again.

*The time College Boy clogged the toilet, left the house and texted me at the grocery store to tell me the toilet was clogged.

*The time College Boy decided to turn the space behind his dresser into a trash dump.

*The time College Boy lit my car on fire.

Need I go on? I could . . .

So to answer the original question, How much wine could a stressed out mom drink if a stressed out mom could drink wine? I'm staying with my original answer. And yes, I speak from experience. All the wine.

Berry Sangria Cake
                                                                          ©www.BakingInATornado.com

Printable Recipe

Ingredients:
1 1/2 sticks butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs, room temperature
1 cup milk
2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 (3 oz) box strawberry creme or vanilla instant pudding mix
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder

8 oz mixed berries of your choice, rinse and pat dry
1 TBSP sugar
1 TBSP cornstarch
3 TBSP red wine

 4 oz raspberries

1 1/2 cups heavy cream
2 tsp raspberry or strawberry extract
3 TBSP powdered sugar
1 TBSP red wine

  Directions:
*Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 X 13 baking pan.
*Beat the butter with the sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, milk and vanilla, then lastly the flour, pudding mix, salt and baking powder.
*Spread evenly into prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the center springs back to the touch. Allow to cool completely.
*While the cake is baking, place the 8 oz of mixed berries in a pan on the stove with 1 TBSP sugar and 1 TBSP red wine. Use a whisk to stir and to break down the berries while heating on medium high. Bring to a boil. Allow to boil for one minute, then lower the heat to low.
*Mix the cornstarch with 1 TBSP cold wine. Whisk into the berry mixture and continue whisking for one minute. Remove from heat. Mix in the 1 TBSP of wine. Push through a strainer, discarding the seeds. Allow to cool completely.
*Rinse the raspberries and pat dry. Count them. Using a thick utensil, like the back of a wooden spoon, poke as many holes in the cake as you have raspberries. Be sure not to poke all the way to the bottom of the baking pan. Push a raspberry down into each hole.
*Using a smaller utensil, like a chopstick, poke about 20 to 30 small holes in the cake around the raspberries.
*Slowly pour the wine and fruit mixture over the cake and, using a spatula, manipulate the liquid into the holes. Place in the fridge while making the topping.
*Beat cream until soft peaks form. Beat in the extract and powdered sugar and wine. Continue beating until firm peaks hold.
*Frost cake. Cover and store in refrigerator.
