Thoughts From a Shower

I honestly have no idea why blog ideas come to me in the shower. But they do. Frequently. I think it’s the Murphy’s Law of blogging that thoughts come to me in the one place where I cannot have my laptop. Then, thanks to my mush-brain, instead of having a leisurely rest of my shower, I have to spend the entire rest of the time there holding tightly onto the thought or risk losing it. Anyway, the next time I have writer’s (I use the term loosely, all of you real writers, don’t be offended) block, you’ll know where to find me.

So I was standing in the shower the other day, just minding my own business; kids at school and no phone ringing. I was actually trying to figure out how a grown woman can take her bra out of the laundry room and lose it between there and her bedroom (still don’t know) when a new recipe suddenly dawned on me. Those of you who’ve read me for a while (thank you, thank you, thank you, but the way) know I don’t profess to be a foodie. I’m a Mom who bakes to relieve the stress of living (again, I use the term loosely) with two teenagers. I mean, my mush-brain is bad, but don’t even get me started on Mom-of-teens-brain (yes, I’m shuddering). When I started this blog I did not intend to include recipes as many of the treats I make are very basic and are adaptations of recipes to fit our tastes (OK and my skill level). I do come up with my own concoctions as well, so when enough people started asking for the recipes, I added them.

Mostly I blog, though, to vent because clearly there’s not enough flour and sugar in the world. . .  So my posts aren’t those great step-by-step baking instructions with the gorgeous pictures illustrating how each process should look along the way. My posts are the rantings of a mush-brain Mom living with teen-brain kids. I do want to add recipes to as many of my posts as I can, to entice (yes, bribe) those of you who like the recipes to come back.

So, back to the shower . . . pondering bra conundrum . . .recipe epiphany strikes. I had known that I wanted to come up with something new, and believe me when I tell you that gets harder and harder to do. Most mixtures and concoctions and pairings have been done. And then it dawned on me . . . but, damn it, I was in the shower. So like those games of “telephone” from the olden days, my left brain tried to remember the steps and told it to my right brain that tried to picture it, which told it to my left brain that tried to remember the steps, which passed it back to my right brain to try to hold on to the picture of it. . . I jumped out of the shower, ran down to the laptop, and despite that old game of “telephone” (anyone remember how that used to turn out?) I think I got it!

  1. Most of my best ideas come to me in the shower or after I climb into bed. Your description of trying to remember it long enough to get it written down is hilarious, since it is oh so familiar to me.
And no, you didn't get me. :)

  2. I get all my ideas in the shower, too. And, is it okay to substitute Cava for the Champagne?

    1. That would have been quite a coincidence if I had actually found that, but having read the article by the woman who had her butt sued off when she used a pic on her blog that was under copyright, I make all my own graphics!

  4. I have lost many articles of clothing between my bedroom and the shower. And the whole thing with getting ideas in the shower totally happens to me too. Or I'm out on a walk.

    1. The shower thing I think happens to a lot of us. The clothing thing, that I just don't get!

  5. Ok, first off your food pictures are always amazing and they make me hungry (and then pissed off that I have no baking skills to actually make your recipes). Second, take the sardines off of that picture and it looks delicious! And I think they need to make water-proof laptops for us bloggers. That would be nice and a built in alarm system for our bras. I seem to lose mine in the bottom of my clothes pile in my room. I'm one of those people who lives out of a laundry basket and never actually hangs anything up. My secret is out.

    1. I think you and I would be RICH if we could come up with a way to do either of those things: make a waterproof laptop OR an alarm system for our bras. Are you in?

While ideas don't come to me while in the shower, they DO come to me when I'm in the bathroom handling..um...paperwork.

  14. Ew Karen! You did get me. I followed you with the kale because the taste can be masked but sardines I thought you lost it! I get ideas in the shower and while driving. I have a strong connection to the healing benefits of water from when I broke my foot and as you read last week the road is where my heart is. The left to right brain cracked me up! Great post...disgusting recipe!

  15. I was seriously wondering when I read the name if this was for real...then I saw how many sardines you included and new you'd lost your rocker! ;-) But I totally agree with the shower ideas thing...or when I'm knee deep in a dirty nappy...or standing in line at the bank with both kids....ect!!

  16. hahah! I was like, "How am I going to say that I'll try that one?" I do like the olives for my dirty martinis though :) Shower thinking is the best. Plus, when else are moms supposed to get any alone time? I stand in that thing til the water turns cold. Sometimes I shut the water off and still stay in there... Glad to read that so many people are reading your blog each day..You're becoming famous, girl!!
