It was a beautiful Saturday morning, but the sky looked a little iffy. Hubs got dressed and headed to the garage.
Hubs: I think I better get the lawn mowed in case it does rain.
Me: If you want to split it with me, let me know and I'll come out and do half.
Hubs: If it starts to rain, come on out and I'll let you finish.
It's so wonderful to be loved and cherished.
It gets so windy in the Spring in the Midwest.
SO windy.
How windy does it get?
Well, I saw this on the way home:
And I spent the rest of the drive hoping I wasn't going to find the contents on my lawn.
'Cause that's happened before.
I was at the grocery store and as I headed towards the blackberries I needed for a recipe, I noticed a very nice looking man standing there looking at the strawberries.
As I walked up, he smiled and said "hi". I did too. I chose my berries and went on my way.
That night at dinner, I thought I'd play it up a bit.
Me: A gorgeous guy flirted with me in the grocery store today.
Hubs: What did he do?
Me: He smiled.
Hubs: What did he say?
Me: Well, he said "hi".
Hubs: Really? Smiled and said "hi"? Well, then I guess my boss, coworkers and all of my clients were flirting with me today too.
Guess he's not the jealous sort.
Undeterred, I tried again the next night.
Me: Some guy was really flirting with me today at the drug store.
Hubs (rolling his eyes): Someone else smile and say "hello"? You really need to get out more.
Me: Jeez, can you at least pretend that you care.
Hubs: OK, tell me about how impressed some guy was by your nasal spray and bandaids. I hear they're going to replace oysters as aphrodisiacs.
I'm thinking we've been together too long.
Hubs comes home from work the next day with these:
Me: It's not my birthday.
Hubs: No.
Me: I didn't miss our anniversary.
Hubs: No.
Me: What are the flowers for?
Hubs: I'm flirting with you.
OK, fine, so maybe he's a keeper after all.
It had been a rainy day, but it was clearing up a bit at dinner time and I really wanted to cook the wings on the grill. I lit it, heated the wings, and when I went out to bring them in, it started to rain. No, not rain, pour.
Next thing I know, I'm at the grill on the deck getting soaked. Totally soaked. The food too. And Hubs is standing in the house, completely dry, lecturing me on cooking on the grill on a rainy day. I was not happy.
During dinner it stopped raining, but when Hubs went out to clean the grill it started again. Somehow he accidentally got locked out there for a bit. I have no idea how that happened . . .

It was the last week of school and I was texting with PurDude about some information I needed from him. He responded but for some reason the exact same text kept coming. I received it 4 times in rapid succession. Later I was texting with him again and again his text came through, then a second time.
Me: You don't have to send me the same text multiple times, I'm not that old, I get it the first time.
PurDude: No idea what you're talking about. Love you, Mom.
Me: Now that you can say multiple times!

{{silence}}
Me: They say everyone has a doppleganger.
College Boy: A what?
Me: A doppleganger. You know, someone who looks just like you.
College Boy: Yeah, I can see that.
Me: So who do you think my doppleganger is?
College Boy: Donald Trump.
You'd think I'd know better by now, right?
It had gotten really nice out and we decided to shut the heat off in the house. So, of course, a few days later it gets cold out again. I really didn't want to put the heat back on, but I was finally ready to give in.
Hubs was downstairs in the man-cave and I was up in the den. I called down to him:
Me: Do you think we should turn the heat back on?
Hubs: No, it's not that cold.
Me: Really, I'm freezing.
Hubs: I just put a sweatshirt on and I'm fine.
I walk downstairs and he's got the fireplace going.
Me: Yeah, I'll go upstairs and put the heat on now . . .
We were in the countdown to PurDude coming home from school. His last few weeks had been incredibly trying and I was worried about him as he headed into finals, but excited to be getting him home.
The last day of classes was room picking day and wills day. PurDude really likes the room he's had this year and was concerned that someone picking ahead of him would take it. Wills is when the graduating seniors in his frat leave tokens to brothers.
He called me to tell me that he had been able to keep his room. I wanted to talk to him but he rushed off the phone saying "sorry Mom, can't talk now, they're starting wills and I want to get in there."
He sounded great. Relieved about his room and happier in general. Considering the conversations I'd been having with him over the last few weeks I have to admit that never have I been so happy to have my child tell me that he didn't have time for me.

Berry Key Lime Pie in a Nut Crust
Printable Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups chopped walnuts
1/4 cup sugar
4 oz raspberries
2 oz blackberries
1 TBSP sugar
1 TBSP cornstarch
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
4 egg yolks
3 oz key lime juice
Directions:
*Grease a 9 inch pie plate. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
*Place the rinsed berries in a pan on the stove with 1 TBSP sugar and 1 TBSP water. Use a whisk to stir and to break down the berries while heating on medium high. Bring to a boil. Allow to boil for one minute, then lower the heat to low.
*Mix the cornstarch with 1 TBSP cold water. Whisk into the berry mixture and continue whisking for one minute. Remove from heat. Push through a strainer, discarding the seeds.
*Place the walnuts in a food processor. While processing, slowly add the sugar through the chute and continue processing until the mixture starts to stick together.
*Pat the mixture into and up the sides of the pie plate. Bake for 10 minutes and remove the crust from the oven. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees.
*Whisk the sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks and key lime juice.
*Pour half of the key lime mixture into the pie crust. Drizzle with about 1/3 of the berry mixture and gently, using a knife, swirl. Pour the rest of the key lime mixture, then another 1/3 of the berry mixture and swirl again.
*Cover the remaining berry mixture and refrigerate for drizzling on slices of pie when serving.
*Place the pie in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, until set. Allow to cool. Store in the fridge.
I was gonna say "as long as you're telling your husband about the guys flirting with you at the market, he has nothing to worry about and he knows it." Then he brought the flowers, how nice!
ReplyDeleteToo bad he got locked out in the rain, though ;-) Were you having blackberry pie in the meantime?
Great to hear that PurDude gets to keep his room! Home away from home!
Happy Weekend, Karen!
IDK, the way he made fun of me, maybe I shouldn't have told him after all. But then, I wouldn't have gotten those beautiful flowers . . .
DeleteYep. He's a keeper. And, locked out there with the BBQ, also something nice to look at ! :)
ReplyDeleteFor a moment . . .
Yeah, I had to be careful about how long he actually got locked out there though. There's a fine line . . .
DeleteAwwww...the flirting story is cute---and you got some flowers out of it, ha-ha. The pie looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteYeah, anything that ends in flowers can't be all bad.
DeleteLOL These are really great! I too, like the lil romantic story best! Great recipe as well!
ReplyDeleteSo glad I made you smile. Great way to start the weekend.
DeleteI've got to try some of those flirting comments. Not because I need to wake hubs up. But sometimes, it is just plain nice to get a bouquet where I cut the flowers myself. And I love pies made with condensed milk. Yum. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteWorked for me. Let me know how it goes for you.
DeleteHubs is a keeper. I like his flirting. This pie looks amazing. The crust is making my mouth water.
ReplyDeleteI hope you grounded College Boy.
Yeah, I could try grounding College Boy. But he'd just say "no" and do whatever he wants anyway.
DeleteO K -- so you want to drive him nuts? Next time you come home from the store or whatever - smile and hum a lot. When he asks why you are so happy say "No reason." But keep smiling to yourself. Eventually he will demand to know who flirted with you this time. They can't stand mystery.
ReplyDeleteHA. That strategy is genius!
DeleteI'm glad I stopped by, you had me snickering at your hubs lol
ReplyDeleteGlad to start your weekend with a laugh. Or a snicker.
DeleteWade is not jealous at all and I REALLY get flirted with, he says "that's nice". But your hubby wanted you to feel special and brought you flowers. That was really sweet.
ReplyDeleteYes, guess he gets it better than I do!
DeleteFunny how those door locks work sometimes. But you did get flowers, PurDude is home and the pie looks amazing...........
ReplyDeleteYes, focus on the positive.
DeleteDonald Trump? Wow, applied ice to the burned area fast!
ReplyDeleteI love the stories of you and your husband. It's great that you can "flirt" with each other one day and then lock each other out the next. That's true love right there.
Well, that's our type of true love anyway, LOL.
DeleteYou were so being flirted with and your husband realized it too! He is a keeper. I hate this time of year, air on, then heat, repeat. Summer better come and stay soon.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Seems like we're going through all four seasons in a week.
Deletehahaha..loved that flirting part...sooo cute..you two:)!!
ReplyDeleteThat pie looks super delicious Dear:)
Yeah, the flirting lessons were kinda fun. I especially loved the flowers at the end.
DeleteI like this so much! Love the images as well.
