This month's theme is Warm and Cozy.
There will be individual project pictures and links to what everyone else has to offer at the end of my post, but here’s a peek at what we all came up with:
I made Sweet Potato Pecan Cake with Maple Glaze. Because nothing says warm and cozy like a fire in the fireplace, a hot (spiked) seasonal drink and the aroma of a holiday cake baking in the oven.
I've heard a lot of people talk about Sweet Potato Pie. It sounds delicious but I have to admit I've never made one. The flavors are so representative of this holiday season I decided to try to develop my own version. But since the holidays are about family, I was unsure how mine would feel about a Sweet Potato Pie. How could I change it up in a way that would be well received?
Cake. That's it. Cake.
I knew I wanted the cake itself to not only include sweet potatoes but other flavors of the season. College Boy loves sweet potato served with brown sugar and maple syrup so I used that as my inspiration.
For ease, and because I knew I'd be adding a lot of flavor, I started with a boxed cake mix and a can of sweet potatoes. I decided to layer the mix with a swirl of cinnamon and maple syrup in the center.
I topped with the rest of the batter and baked.
More maple syrup mixed with powdered sugar for a simple glaze over the top once the cake was cool and it was ready to serve.
This cake filled my house with all of the aromas of Fall and the holiday season.
As always, any time you make one of my recipes, feel free to post a picture of it to my Baking In A Tornado Facebook Page. I'd love to see it!

DeleteIt looks and sounds very yummy. I bet the smells were wonderful. Why can't Siri activate a smell? So the key to great reviews in your house is cake over pie? I like it. I too enjoy a piece of cake over a slice of pie, don't know why but that is my first choice always.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not saying they'd turn either one down . . .
DeleteI AM DEFINITELY MAKING THIS - my mouth is watering already!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo happy, be sure to let me know what you think!
DeleteOkay..that looks amazing
ReplyDeleteThank you. Tastes pretty amazing too!
DeleteYou never fail to amaze me. I love how you take an idea and tweak it to become something so much more than what it was. You're like a mad scientist in the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI like that you added "scientist" to the "mad" that my kids tend to call me.
DeleteNot warm and cosy here but stinking bloody hot
ReplyDeleteAre you trying to make me jealous?
DeleteOh my my my. I just shared this with my husband...the Pound Cake King.
ReplyDeleteOooh, bet he's got some good recipes to share.
DeleteWhere is smell-o-blog? When will there ever be a scent plug in (although we may want to be careful of what we wish for). I am not sure of the taste, when I run it through my mind, but the cooking scent must be fantastic. How do you think of this stuff? Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteIt tastes as good as it smells!

DeleteYum! It looks and smells amazing. We need some warm & cozy here, so I may have to try this! It is only 11 degrees now. ugh.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's colder than it is here. Although I hear we're about to get that weather within the next few days. Maybe I better make another cake myself.
