Secret Subject Swap, October 2014

Welcome to another Secret Subject Swap. This week 14 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

My subject is: Write a story about the letter Q. It was submitted by Spatulas on Parade.

q: Mom, read me a story.
Q: Certainly honey, what would you like to hear?
q: There are so many good books. Why are there none about “q”.
Q: Oh, but there are. Sit here, I’ll read you this one about Queen Q and the quintet.

There once was a quintet that was in quite a quandary. Quinn, Quincy, Quentin, Quaid and Quillan lived for music. But the truth was, they were barely getting by. The question? How to make a living through their passion. If they didn’t find a way, one would have to quit. They’d be a quartet.

The quarreled, they quibbled, then they were quiet. They were no quitters. They needed funds quickly. There was only one solution, it was really quite obvious, they’d have to ask the Queen. Her majesty Queen Q was the quantifiable expert on all things “q”. They would ask for an audience and wait. If audiences had reached their quota, they were out of luck. If there were openings, they hoped to qualify.

One month later they entered the quaint Quad and approached the Queen’s quarters. Each one had to admit that their heart started to quicken. They quivered and quaked but were steadfast in their mission. They needed her answer, knew she wouldn’t be quixotic.

Their query was put forth to Her Highness on her throne. She was quiet, then quizzed them: “What have you tried? No quackery, what honest attempts have you made?”

The quintet stood tall and answered without qualms. They loved their music, tried new venues and songs, lowered their prices and renewed their devotion to their quest.

Queen Q pulled out her quill and began to write. . . and I quote “I will see that you qualify to play at the Museum of Fine Art. Perform at an afternoon brunch. Serve my favorite Bagel Crisp Brunch Sandwiches and something to quench their thirst. You will make your quota, you will even thrive and prosper.”

Although they didn’t quibble, all of the men were thinking the same thing: “The Queen’s favorite Bagel Crisp Brunch Sandwiches? No. Surely we should serve quiche or quinoa, quohog, quince or quail.” But they unquestionably trusted the Queen and went on their way.

They tried to quell their qualms but the Queen was true to her word and the day came when they were to play their brunch concert. If they succeeded, it would be a weekly event.

The venue was beautiful. People could stroll the museum while they played background music in a central area. Tables were set up for the Bagel Sandwiches and drinks, and for people to sit and eat and enjoy the music.

The quintet were in tuxes as they entered the room and set up under the quatrefoil window. They took up their instruments and played as people wandered through the museum. And then, suddenly, the quiet gave way to a queer quickening buzz. Were they failing? Were the people loosing interest? The men looked up.

Right there, sitting at a table enjoying a Bagel Crisp Brunch Sandwich and swaying to the music was the Queen. The tables filled, the audience clapped. The quintet knew they’d be back next week.

Q: I bet, my beautiful child, that you think that was how Queen Q saved the dreams of the quintet.
q: Well yes, it was, Mom.
Q: No, it wasn’t. It was the story of how the quintet refused to let their own dreams die. Never quit, dear q, never quit.

Printable Recipe

Ingredients (makes about 24 mini sandwiches):
Approximately 48 Bagel crisps, any flavor
8 oz whipped cream cheese
2 scallions, thinly chopped
Approximately 3 oz smoked salmon
½ tsp lemon zest
Dash of salt and pepper
12 slices Deli ham, sliced thin
3 Roma tomatoes, sliced thin

Directions:
*For each sandwich you’ll use 2 bagel crisps.
*Mix together the cream cheese, scallion, salmon, lemon zest, salt, and pepper.
*On each bagel crisp, smear some of the cream cheese mixture. Don’t use too much as it’ll ooze out when you eat it.
*Cut each slice of ham in half.
*Place a half slice of ham and a slice of tomato on top of one side of the bagel crisp. Cover with the other side to form a sandwich.
*Serve immediately. If you choose to refrigerate them until later, the bagel crisp will soften.

  1. GUESS WHAT? I figured it out so I can comment now. Apparently it is a 'serious' problem that many people have and has to do with third party extensions. It is strange that your blog was the only one I could not comment on, however. Thank you for being patient with me as I love your posts. AND YOUR RECIPES! and your PICTURES are to drool over!
