Poetry Monday's once a week.
I bet you know which day.
I don't participate every time,
But today I've come out to play.

My friends assign each week a theme,
Kites is what they chose.
Now it's up to all of us,
to put our thoughts into prose.

Dibs, Coats, and Kites

They'd grown up by each other's side,
best friends their families are.
Through all life's ups and downs, they were
from each other, never far.

Since they'd always been together,
they could read each other's thoughts.
They would speak in acronyms,
a private language for public spots.

Like if they're at a party and
one's drinking a bit too much,
the other calls DIBS suggesting they,
Dial It Back, Sweety (just a touch).

On poker nights with family,
competition goes over the top.
COATS doesn't mean it's time to leave,
but Cash Out And Tactfully Stop.

Falling in love had never been,
in any way unexpected.
Felt like right at birth they were,
for each other pre-selected.

So when his birthday came around,
the first year they were wed.
She wanted her gift to matter,
so this is what she said:

"I'll make a favorite dinner and,
we'll have a champagne toast.
"But I want to give a special gift,
to the man I love the most."

Creamy Portobello Rigatoni

"I'll tell you what I want," he said,
"there's just one thing, you see."
"A kite," he smiled at her impishly,
"is all I want, from you to me."

She thought the request unusual,
though in general not a reach.
So many people flew them,
their condo being on the beach.

But to her it didn't feel quite right,
was there something she didn't get?
His impish smile was haunting her,
she'd not kite shop, not quite yet.

Next day, off to grocery shop,
on their way down to the car,
He leaned in, then she got it,
his gift request, not at all bizarre.

A kite! Of course! He was telling her,
what, in his life, supersedes.
A Kiss In The Elevator means
her love is all he needs!

Ingredients:
1 TBSP olive oil
1/2 red pepper, seeded and sliced
2 cloves minced garlic
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 cup grape tomatoes, halved
8 oz Portobello mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
1 1/2 cups half and half
1/2 cup marscapone
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
16 oz rigatoni
fresh parsley

Directions:
*In a large saute pan, heat the olive oil on medium heat. Add the red pepper, garlic, onion, and tomatoes. Cook and stir until the vegetables just start to soften, about 5 minutes.
*While the vegetables are softening, boil water in a large pot and cook the rigatoni to al dente. Drain. Move to a large bowl.
*To the saute pan, add the portobellos. Cook and gently stir for 2 minutes. Add the half and half, mascarpone, salt, and pepper.
*Bring to a boil, gently stirring in the mascarpone. Boil for 1 minute, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
*Add the sauce to the rigatoni and gently stir together. Top with the parsley.

  1. When you love your man, heading off to the kitchen is a great idea. He's one fortunate husband.

  6. Oh, I loved this. I've been known to sneak in a KITE from time to time although we haven't been in an elevator together since early 2020. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
