Count the Evens: Word Counters

Counting my words again.

Today my fellow Word Counters and I are sharing our monthly group post. Each month one group member picks a number between 12 and 50. All participating bloggers are then challenged to write something (or a few somethings, as the case may be) using that exact number of words. Today we all share what we came up with.

This month's number is 43
It was chosen by Diane of On the Border.

As I've been doing in these Word Counters posts, I've chosen a theme and am using my word count multiple times in keeping with the theme. This month I've chosen the theme Count the Evens.

~ I admit I've been out of sorts lately, kind of lost, untethered, down in the dumps, at odds including with myself. What to do? Make lemons into lemonade? See the glass half full? Since I'm at odds, I'm trying to count the evens.

~ Even though March madness didn't turn out as we'd all hoped, a fabulous year of Purdue basketball came to a disappointing end, Red Sox season has started. I look forward to afternoons watching the games (and second guessing the manager) with my family.

~ Even though my allergies are bad, and sure to get worse before they get better, I can't wait for the next few months of having my face in the sun, evening cocktails on the deck, and flowers growing in my long dormant pots.

~ Even though laundry is piled to the top of the chute, this is the age of convenience. Any number of stores will have packages of new underwear right at my front door in about an hour. And if that doesn't make you smile . . .

~ Even though it's cold and cloudy, I'll take that as a sign to go bake something chocolate. Possibly while wearing (new) underwear. With a sugar rush, I may even start some laundry. Then, just to show Mother Nature who's boss, I'm grilling dinner.

~ Even though bigotry and bullying has reached an all time high, right out there in public, even though it's devastatingly loud and proud, (including a recent shocking example from my own family member), I look for, and find, proof of humanity. Every day.

~ Even though I have only one fresh lemon (note to self: add lemons to the shopping list), I'll try making lemonade. Even though the glass may be half empty, I'll try filling it. Because it's only through counting the evens that we change the odds.

Ingredients:
about 1 1/2# skirt steak
1/3 cup soy sauce
2 TBSP molasses
2 TBSP cider vinegar
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp ginger paste
2 TBSP brown sugar
1 green onion, chopped

Directions:
*To make the marinade: whisk together all of the ingredients except the steak.
*Place the steak into a resealable gallon bag, cover with the marinade, close the bag and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but I like to marinate for 24 - 36 hours. Turn the bag now and then.
*Preheat the grill to about 425 degrees. Remove the steak from the marinade and place on the grill. Cook for 1 minute, flip the steak over and cook for 1 minute on the other side.
*Reduce the heat to madium and cook for about 5 - 7 minutes per side, flipping once halfway through. Watch the steak, how long it will take depends on the thickness of your steak, the heat of your grill, and your preference for how well you want it done.
*Allow the steak to rest for 5 minutes. Slice against the grain.

  1. Even though I sit herE reading your blog, I have, dare I say it, woke to the fact I am going to be 78 in a few months and I have let the last 5 years slide by in a blur.
Even though I have not much to distribute, I do not want a judge to have his say in the matter.
Even though it will deplete some of what I have to distribute to my heirs, to an attorney I must go.
Even though this is fun, I now really must get off Facebook and scoot. One more
Even though probably not a good idea, I am driving. Gone. Donna

  2. Looking for the silver lining takes work and is worth it.

Even though i'd rather be retired from my physically demanding job, it's healthy for me and keeps me from turning into a sloth.

  5. I hope you get to a better place soon, Karen. It takes a lot of work to dig yourself out of a pit like this, but you are using what you love (experimenting with recipes) which I hope helps. I think we are all suffering from....something...in one way or another, not that this ever excuses bad behavior. To have a family member display a shocking behavior is its own stress. I hope you have support in working through this.

    1. Thank you, Alana. Actually, having something to look forward to helps a lot, and both of my boys will be home in a couple of weeks.

  7. I've got my 5 minutes of wifi!
I always think of the cartoon 'Blondie' when I think of being down in the dumps.
Blondie: When I'm down in the dumps I always buy a new hat!
Dagwood (Blondie's husband): So that's where you get them!

But seriously, you are handling this exactly right. When you are standing in the dark, look for the light! Clean underwear for all!
    Missing you my friend! -Diane
