Call Me Victor: Use Your Words

Bagel Breakfast Bake | recipe developed by Karen of www.BakingInATornado.com | #recipe #breakfast

Today’s post is a monthly writing challenge. If you’re new here, this is how it works: my friend Diane and I picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases to submit to each other to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once. Both posts will be unique as we each have our own set of words we're working with.

At the end of this post, you'll find the link to Diane's post, be sure to check it out, see what words I sent her and how she used them.

I'm using:  super ~ silent ~ sinuous ~ snake ~ serious

It was driving her mad. She was sitting at her desk but not getting a bit of work done, completely unproductive, consumed by her thoughts.

This was serious. Her super talented co-worker was to blame here. Yes, she was included in the daily break room gathering wth her colleagues this morning, talking and smiling before heading to their work stations, but that had only served to whet her appetite. Fuel her current obsession.

So, she came up with a plan.

Stealth is the key to success here. She must be silent. Follow a sinuous trail through the office. Duck into the lady's room, from there to the copy room, slip into that empty work station. And she would have to take this circuitous route, all while acting nonchalant.

Yeah, she was that far gone.

Clearly, she had no pride, she thought, finally slithering into her destination like as a snake.

But success! A classsic case of the ends justifying the means. To the victor go the spoils.

Punish or Pardon for Pie: Use Your Words

Cranberry Apple Walnut Pie, bursting with fall holiday flavors | recipe developed by www.BakingInATornado.com | #recipe #pie

Today’s post is a monthly writing challenge. If you’re new here, this is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once. All of the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s  participating knows who got their words and in what direction the recipient will take them. Until now.

At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.
I'm using:  policeman ~ incorrigible ~ delight ~ reckless ~ stop
They were submitted by Diane of On the Border.

I'm laughing as I'm reading these assigned words. Why? Because of who assigned them.

Diane uses her words each month to treat us to the latest chapter in her fictional story about the multiple mishaps of her protagonist, Sally. I look at the words that she sent in and all I can think of is that these would be perfect words for a Sally story.

But since I didn't assign her words back to her (wouldn't that have been a fun surprise), I'm going to let them inspired me to write you a little piece of fiction myself today. A short story not about mishaps, but about . . . well, you'll see . . .

"Make an arrest," the policeman thought wearily to himself, "that's what you've been trained to do." Lashing out, fighting, was impulsive, reckless, someone could have been hurt. You just cannot lose your shit like that and have there be no consequences.

He'd been well trained, and schooled on the streets, about how giving a pass to an unchecked temper is often a precursor to escalation. The long term ramifications can be bold, even incorrigible behavior, something worse that would have to be dealt with. Yes, even at the exhausting end of an 8 hour shift, the responsibility to put a stop to it now is his. It's a commitment he made, one he takes seriously.

But the truth is, it's late, and de-escalation of this kind of unruly behavior takes time, patience, even explanation. Right now, nothing would please him more than to have the option to forget what he just witnessed. Then he wouldn't have to put off for another minute making his way to that delightful Cranberry Apple Walnut Pie his wife baked today. He could hear it calling his name.

But he's on scene, and unfortunately, without back up, he's the only one on scene tonight. So, this latest incident is officially his to deal with.

Damn!

"Although," he thought, leaving the den and heading for the kitchen, "despite all of my training, perhaps an arrest would be a bit excessive. "They do say it's best to just ignore these tantrums. She is, after all, not even 3 yet."

Well, that . . . and pie . . .

Ingredients:
1 pie crust
1 TBSP flour

4 apples of your choice, cored, peeled, and sliced into about 16 slices each
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 TBSP flour
1 can (1 oz) whole berry cranberry sauce
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

3/4 stick butter, cubed
3/4 cup flour
1/3 cup brown sugar

Directions:
*Place a large piece of tin foil in the oven and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
*Spread 1 TBSP flour over the pie crust. Flip the crust over, into a deep dish pie pan so the flour is on the bottom. Fit the crust into the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Crimp the top between two fingers, all the way around.
*Place the apple slices into a bowl with 3/4 cup brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Mix to coat evenly. Remove about 16 apple slices and arrange in the pie crust. Remove another 10 slices and set aside.
*Cut the remaining apple slices in half (chunks), add 2 TBSP flour, the can of cranberry sauce, and the walnuts. Mix well and pour evenly into the pie crust over the bottom layer of apples.
*Place the cubed butter in a bowl. Cut in 3/4 cup of flour and 1/3 cup brown sugar and, using the tines of a fork, mash together until it forms a crumble. Sprinkle over the pie, then arrange the reserved apple slices on top.
*Place the pie on the tin foil in the preheated oven. Bake for 55 minutes. Cool to room temperature before slicing.

The Love Theory

  Grilled Blackberry Pork Medallions | recipe developed by www.BakingInATornado.com | #recipe #dinner
News Flash: Did the dish run away with the spoon? Or did something more nefarious happen? It's true that the case of the missing dish and spoon has not been solved. In fact, despite that it's rumored that a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich, there remains only colloquial testimony, so no such panel has been convened.

There is a new case though, one that may be solvable, albeit without nursery rhyme testimony.

There is a developing circumstantial case that could be made that the forks ran away with the socks.

Now, you know I love mysteries, read them all the time. If I were to write one about this case, I'd start with the facts, add in the word on the street, put together the clues, and follow the leads. Where does it all take me? Socks, although we all say that our dryer eats one of each pair, and I suppose, as theories go, it bears investigation, I have come to believe something very different. I think that they just aren't necessarily happy with the mate they've been assigned.

I can't really say as I blame them, I'm someone who believes in free choice. In fact, I know that we all have been guaranteed the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness by the constitution, which specifically states that governments are created to protect those rights.

So how about this? Rather than having been eaten by a machine, perhaps those missing socks did just that, made a choice. Fell in love with someonething different. Chose a life of mixed marriage far away from those trying to force them into a relationship with "one of their own."

That's my theory of the case. Here are the facts, as we know them:

Single socks disappear. Not temporarily, but permanently. Although the dryer is a good suspect, there are a few things that don't make sense: how can it so consistently choose just one of a pair? And how is it disposing of them without so much as a thread left behind? Would there not be some evidence at some point.

Forks are also disappearing. Simultaneously. Not knives or spoons. Most of us have 12 of each: dinner forks, dessert forks, knives, small spoons, soup spoons. I noticed, months ago, that the fork section of the silverware drawer was looking light. I didn't give it much thought, though, as some could be in the dishwasher, or dirty in the fridge (don't ask).

But I was able to deduce, one evening as I was finishing up emptying the dishwasher, that I actually didn't have all of my forks. Not even close. Checking, I noted that there were none sitting in the watermelon container in fridge either.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, I only have 7 forks. Strange. Even stranger is that now, about a month later, I have 6.

And don't tell me the dishwasher is eating the forks. One voracious appliance is hard enough to believe, there can't possibly be two rogue cannibal mastermind machines.

No, single socks are missing and so are dinner forks. Coincidence?

You know what one of the most frequent things I consistently hear from detectives in all of those true crime stories I watch? "I don't believe in coincidences."

Yeah, me neither. So here's my working theory, one I've not yet been able to disprove: the forks and the socks, unhappy with their mates and unable to conform to societal pressure, have gone off to be their genuine selves. Yes, together.

Let me ask you a favor because, if I'm right, this was a difficult and painful choice. These socks know they've left a mate behind, fated to either be discarded or matched with a clashing mate. So, if you happen to see a sock, gaily cavorting with a stainless steel fork, please do not approach them. Leave them to the life they've chosen, the life they felt they had to sacrifice everything for.

But, if it's safe, if you can do it covertly, take a picture. Or, if not, just call in the tip, I'll close out the file and move on.

After all, there's still the case of the missing dinner to solve. And I fear it may have met quite a different fate, one harder to digest, from that of the socks and the forks.

Ingredients:
2 # pork tenderloin
salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder
6 oz fresh blackberries
1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce
3 TBSP blackberry jam
1 TBSP lime juice

Directions:
*Sprinkle all sides of the pork tenderloin with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate.
*Reserve a few blackberries for garnish, then to a sauce pan, over medium high heat, add the barbecue sauce, remaining blackberries, blackberry jam, and lime juice. Bring to a boil, whisking now and then, reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook and whisk for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat for 5 minutes, then carefully press through a sieve over a bowl, and discard the seeds.
*Reserve and refrigerate approximately 2/3 cup of the sauce for serving with the meal. Allow the rest of the sauce to cool completely.
*While the sauce is cooling, remove the tenderloin from the plastic wrap and slice into about 3/4 inch thick medallions, and place in the refrigerator in a gallon sized sealable plastic bag. Once the sauce has cooled, add it to the bag with the pork, making sure all of the slices are covered, both sides. Seal and refrigerate for 3 - 4 hours, turning now and then.
*Preheat the grill to medium. Place the chops on the grill and reduce the heat to medium low. Discard the rest of the sauce that has been in the bag with the pork.
*Cook for 6 minutes. Flip the chops over and cook for about 6 - 8 more minutes.
*NOTE: how long these will take to grill will depend on the thickness of your medallions and how you like them cooked. At the least, pork should be cooked to 145 degrees.
*Serve with the reserved dipping barbecue sauce and garnish with the reserved blackberries.
